Trombone Shorty

2009

36" x 54", pigment ink and acrylic on canvas

This portrait depicts the great NewOrlean's trombonist as he played at the opening of the Fox Oakland. This painting, signed by myself and Trombone Shorty, was exhibited and auctioned at the Blue Bear School of Music Gala, at which Trombone Shorty was the headliner, in the historic Bimbos 365 Club in San Francisco.

I was inspired by Trombone Shorty and my painting of him to create an intaglio print of the image. I used a technique called soft ground etching. Here is the result and some images from the process.

The final etching.

Drawing (in reverse) onto wax paper which removes the soft ground from the surface of the plate where ever pressure has been applied.

The "reverse" wax paper drawing.

The plate sitting in the acid bath - the acid eats into the plate where ever the soft ground has been removed.

Inking the plate - the ink stays in the rough etched regions where the plate was exposed to the acid.

Finally...pulling the print!
