This image is based on a series of photos I took whilst Lee Presson and the Nails were playing at the BackBeat night club in Sunnyvale. I was intrigued by the beautiful shadows cast on the wall next to the band. The negative space seemed even more evocative of the spirit of the music than just straight forward shots of the musicians themselves. I used 1000 ASA film and an Olympus Stylus camera. I used MetaCreations Painter 5.5 software on a Macintosh PowerPC 9500 / 132 (208 MB RAM, 2 GB hard drive) with a Wacom ArtZ tablet and stylus to collage and manipulate the photos.
Here's a detail of the image:
One of the challenges in creating an image like this is deciding what to exclude from the composition. That is, how to crop the image, how to compose the elements in the simplest, most elegant, way. Here's an earlier crop that I found was a bit too busy and disjointed.
