Beyond the Brush

Course Requirements

No prior experience of the software MetaCreations Painter 5.0, or of drawing and painting, is necessary. A basic understanding of the use of a personal computer, either Windows-based PC or Macintosh, is needed, plus use of a web browser and e-mail software. If you are taking the course please make sure you have prepared all the following materials before the beginning the course.

Materials List

Computer
Painter Software
E-mail Software
Web Browser
File Transfer Software (Macintosh)
File Transfer Software (Windows)
Tablet
Notebook
Sketching Tools
Mirror
Models

1) Computer
Power Macintosh orr Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 (486DX, Pentium or faster) computer with colo monitor, preferably at least 17", and 24-bit color graphics card (not essential but recommended). The official minimum application RAM requirements are 12 MB Macintosh, 16 MB Windows and 32 MB Windows NT. I recommend at least 32 MB application RAM and 100 MB free hard drive space whatever computer you have. The higher the power of the computer, the larger the hard drive storage capacity, and the more memory (application RAM) you have installed, the better.

2) Painter 5.0 or 5.5 Software
You will need MetaCreations Painter 5.0 or 5.5 software. If you have an earlier version of Painter upgrade to 5.5. If you purchased Painter 5.0 when it first came out I recommend visiting the MetaCreations web site (www.metacreations.com) and downloading the upgrade patch that corrects a few small bugs in the early shipping version. This course is specifically written for Painter 5.0 and 5.5 and refers to brushes not found in earlier versions.

3) E-mail Software
You will need to be able to communicate via e-mail.

4) Web Browser
You will need access to the internet World Wide Web. The most up to date version of Netscape Communicator is ideal. Windows Explorer can also be used.

5) File Transfer Software (Macintosh)
If you are on a Macintosh, you will need a program called Fetch 3.0.3. If you don't already have Fetch 3.0.3, or if you have an earlier version, download it through your web browser. Visit the Fetch web site where you can find updates and support information.

6) File Transfer Software (Windows)
If you have a PC with Windows '95, you will need a program called WS_FTP. If you don't already have this program, download it through your web browser. Visit the Ipswitch web site for updates and product support. Ipswitch are the makers of WS_FTP.

7) Tablet
A graphics tablet with pressure-sensitive stylus is not optional: it is a must! It does everything a mouse does plus adds the benefit of a natural pen-based interface with the computer, essential for utilizing the computer as an art tool, and the power of fine control of brush behavior through pressure variation. I recommend you read the Tablet.pdf notes contained within the Documentation folder on the Painter 5.0 CD-ROM. I use the Wacom tablet with 6" x 8" active surface area (model ArtZII in the US and model A5 in Europe).

8) Notebook
Preferably a spiral-bound or hard-backed notebook. Alternatively you could add blank pages to the ring bound workbook folder. I recommend that throughout this course you have this notebook at hand. You will find these an invaluable source of reference information at a later date. When you come a great brush look that you like note down the exact settings so you can repeat it. When you come across a problem note down the exact sequence of events leading up to it and the contents of any error messages that appear.

9) Sketching Tools
Gather a collection of soft pencils, conte crayons, pens, oil pastels, charcoal. Purchase a ring-bound sketchbook with white cartridge paper. 8.5" x 11" (or European A4) is a good size: not too small but convenient to carry around. Regular sketching from nature will help your drawing skills and complement the exercises you do on the computer as part of this course with . Carry the sketchbook around with you and jot down quick sketches of scenes or people that catch your eye. This will help your awareness and develop your ability to see (train your eye).

10) Mirror
Mirror for self-portraits. You will need to be able to place this mirror next to your computer screen so you can conveniently look from the mirror to the screen. A small self-standing mirror is ideal.

11) Models
This course is focused on painting portraits from life. Ideally have a few models, men and women, with different head and face types. However, if obtaining models is a problem, then a single model or a combination of still life, animal portraits and self-portraits can substitute. My intention in this class is to avoid working from photographs. Photographs restrict the amount your eye can be trained. A photo has limited 2 dimensional information, is usually smaller than life and imposes a preset frame on your view.
