The Speech

Portrait of Barack Obama

2008

Pigment Ink and Acrylic on Canvas, 40" x 57"

This portrait was inspired by Barack Obama's speech accepting the Democratic nomination for President, at the Democratic Convention, delivered on August 28th, 2008, at Invesco Field stadium in front of an estimated 84,000 people. Watching on television, I used my iPhone to capture images from the speech which then formed the reference photos used to create this portrait.

Wearing one of my Inauguration T-shirts, I met with Senator Dianne Feinstein at her office the day after the Obama Inaugural.

The presentation to LeRoy Neiman took place at the LeRoy Neiman Art Center for Youth, San Francisco, a wonderful facility that offers free art classes to local youth. The portrait of LeRoy in the background was made by students at the Center.
