Mayor Joseph L. Alioto

2005
Combined media on canvas, approximately 96" x 114"

This portrait of former San Francisco Mayor Joseph L. Alioto was originally created as part of the San Francisco Legendary Mayors series. Included in the painting are many visual elements, some political and some personal, including excerpts from a letter Alioto wrote to his daughter Angela on her graduation as a lawyer, the invite to his inauguration, a mayoral campaign button from 1967, the nationally recognized Transamerica Building the creation of which Mayor Alioto vigorously supported during his tenure, and the Certificate of Commemoration printed for Alioto's historic early morning 1906 San Francisco Earthquake Observance at City Hall, April 18, 1969, and many other images. This portrait was created with the gracious and generous assistance of Angela Alioto who kindly gave Jeremy access to her personal archives. To see further pictures relating to Mayor Alioto visit the scrapbook on Angela Alioto's web site.

A smaller version of this portrait portrait hangs in the Law Offices of Angela Alioto. Here is a representation of how the portrait may look as a larger scale artwork on display in the San Francisco City Hall.
