Painter

Corel Painter 6.1 is a fabulous paint and image manipulation program that I use for almost all my artwork. It was originally created by Fractal Design, subsequently published by MetaCreations, and now published by Corel.

Classes and Workshops
You'll find here a summary of Painter classes, workshops and online courses I teach. My classes are designed to enhance your artistic productivity and empower your creative expression.

New Book
I shall be publishing a new book based on my online portrait class curriculum (visit the Beyond the Brush 2000 class student gallery). It will be a practical creativity workbook with exercises that lead you through the process of creating expressive digital portraits using Corel Painter 6.0.
Please e-mail me if you'd like to be informed when it is available.

Video Training
I am the instructor on 'Total Painter', a comprehensive in-depth Painter 5.5 Web Edition video training course. The ten tape series (which includes a CD-ROM) is designed for all levels and is cross-platform. Learn practical tips and advanced techniques that are applicable to the most recent version of Painter.

Painter Tech Support
If you have technical questions regarding Painter first check the Corel FAQ web page. If that does not answer your question then contact the Corel technical support 1-613-274-0500 (8:30am - 7:30pm EST) or email custserv2@corel.ca. You will need to give your Painter serial number. The remaining option is to ask other Painter users on the Painter email list or Painter WWUG Forum (see below). Corel also will be sharing Painter tips and techniques on it's community Designer.com web page.

The Painter e-mail list can be very informative (provided you don't mind a large volume of e-mail, most of which may not be directly relevant to you). To subscribe to this list, email the message 'subscribe painter-list' to the address 'majordomo@majordomo.net'. There is also a Painter List option called 'digest' (several e-mails in one volume). To join this email the message 'subscribe painter-list-digest' to the address 'majordomo@majordomo.net'.

World Wide User Group Painter Forum
An online Painter forum where any issues regarding Painter can be discussed in a convivial, informative and educational environment. The threads of each discussion topic can be easily followed and viewed at leisure. I am the host of this forum and shall be make regular contributions to the discussions. Please visit.

There is also a Digital Artist e-mail list that covers more general areas related to digital art (not Painter specific).

Sumi-e: A Meditation in Ink by Paul Siudzinski (Drake 1978 ISBN 0-8473-1659-9)
Excellent introduction to the beautiful and elegant philosophy of Japanese brush painting. Many of the Zen principles explained in this book apply equally to the art of digital portrait painting.

The Natural Way to Draw by Kimon Nicolaides (Houghton Mifflin 1941)
Thorough workbook full of exercises that teach traditional drawing skills. A classic tome that is timeless.

Design and Form by Johannes Itten (Thames & Hudson ISBN 0-500-27067-8)
A succinct and fascinating overview of the Basic Course in design and form that Itten developed at the Bauhaus school following the First World War. Many ideas that can be usefully applied to portrait painting.

A popular book full of great exercises designed to bring out your creative and artistic side. You can apply most of Edward's suggestions to working on the computer.

Color Theory

Rennaisance 2001 web site
Select EXPLORE COLOR from the Site Navigator. The section COLOR CONTRASTS within the Explore Color page is very good. The site is very graphic intensive and you may need to wait a while for it to download.

Davis Publications' ArtSlides
Educational art slide sets that accompany useful curriculum illustrating the theory and practise of art. The web site doesn't show the actual slides but has all the accompanying text which in itself is very informative.
