Cityshapes ~ Island

An artistic collaboration with modern dancer Tiffany Barbarash

38" x 38"

2006

Tiffany and I are exploring the interaction and impact of shapes through the movement and forms of Tiffany's body as she dances amongst the dynamic diversity of shapes, textures, materials and forms offered by the rich tapestry of San Francisco's cityscape. The title of our collaboration is “Cityshapes: Motion, Body & Soul”. The multi-disciplinary artwork/performance is divided into five movements, each inspired by a different location in San Francisco. The photographs captured in each location have been distilled into a single painted artwork. Thus each Movement has a painting to go with it. The series of paintings created for this project, as well as the photographs, serve as inspiration and guidance for a dance performance by Tiffany.

Movement I, “Island”, (artwork above) is based on photographs (a sampling of which is shown below) taken of Tiffany dancing in the small artificial island situated between the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Fountain at the Yerba Buena Gardens.
