Malcolm, Esther and Martin - Spirits of Freedom

1994

This triptych was created for an invitational art exhibit at the Jewish Museum in San Francisco. The theme was Purim Masks that symbolized the relationship between Jewish-American and African-American communities during the 1960s. The African mask motif is a scanned image manipulated in Photoshop. It is based on a Congalese mask of initiation into adulthood. The three figures represented in this triptych are Martin Luther King, Jr., Esther and Malcolm X, all figures who put their lives on the line for their respective communities freedom and equality.

The portraits were created freehand directly on a Macintosh IIfx (20/160), using a Wacom graphics tablet & pressure sensitive stylus, and SuperMac PixelPaint Pro 2.0 software.
